چکیده

Introduction.?Koch in 1883 isolated the cholera vibrio from cholera patients in Calcutta. Tinkler and Prior (1884) and Deneke (1885) described vibrios resembling Koch's vibrio that had been isolated from non-choleraic material. In the twelve years following the discovery of the cholera vibrio, Metchnikof, Sanarelli, Gunter, Foker oftid other workers isolated vibrios indistinguishable morphologically from Koch's vibrios from water supplies of places where cholera existed, or had recently occurred. Several tests were devised to differentiate the vibrio isolated from cholera patients and from the vibrios isolated from other sources. The cholera-red reaction, the character and rate of gelatin liquefaction, the hemolytic reaction, the pathogenicity for laboratory animals were each

Mutation of Cholera Vibrios

In a previous communication (1931) we showed that colonies obtained from the direct plating of a cholera stool may be variable in their agglutinability to a cholera standard serum and in their lysability to the cholera bacteriophage. Some colonies escape infection by bacteriophage present in the stool, and are lysable by the filtrate of the stool from which they themselves were isolated. From t...

Vibrio Choleræ and Other Vibrios. (Observations on 'Water Vibrios', with Special Reference to Their Variation during Storage in Culture Medium and Possible Relationship to Vibrio Choleræ)

Tomb and Maitra (1926) as a result of their investigations concluded that the agglutinable vibrio found in the dejecta of cholera patients, and the non-agglutinable vibrio found in carriers and in natural waters contaminated with human faeces are one and the same organism. They arrived at this conclusion after inseminating tanks* with fresh cholera stools containing large numbers of agglutinabl...

A Schematic Representation of the Variants of Cholera Vibrio Produced under the Influence of Bacteriophage

In endemic centres of cholera such as Calcutta and in areas where cholera occurs in epidemic form, vibrios can be isolated not only from cholera cases but also from contacts, healthy individuals, waters, flies and other sources. These vibrios may be divided into two great classes, vibrios that are agglutinable by ** specific cholera serum and those that are not agglutinable by this serum. The c...

The bacteriophage-susceptibility test in differentiating Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio el tor.

The haemolytic properties of El Tor vibrios are usually utilized to differentiate them from the non-haemolytic cholera vibrios. In some freshly isolated Vibrio el tor strains, however, the haemolytic property may be ill-developed and this test may then fail to reveal the true identity of the strains. In order to overcome this difficulty a number of tests have been developed. Investigations repo...

Non-agglutinable vibrios causing cholera-like disease in Singapore.

Five strains of non-agglutinable or NAG vibrios have been isolated from stool cultures of patients with cholera -like disease. They resembled the true cholera vibrios culturally, but were inagglutinable by the cholera O -group antisera or the rough anti -cholera serum. The vibrios were sensitive to most of the antibiotics tested. Immunological studies showed that the five strains belonged to th...
